Running between Chicago and Los Angeles this legendary road passes through the heart of the United States, taking in some of the country’s most typical roadside scenes. Passing through the golden sands of Los Angeles, past the Grand Canyon, the Native American communities of the Southwest, to the streets of St Louis and Chicago, an unforgettable journey through the United States.
Day 1: London, Chicago
Meet the Tour Manager and your travelling companions at London Heathrow airport for the direct flight to Chicago. On arrival we will be met by our wheelchair accessible coach for the transfer to the Hilton Hotel, where we will be based for the next two nights.
Day 2: Chicago
Learn more about this beautiful city built on the shores of Lake Michigan during our morning guided city tour. The afternoon is free to explore the “windy city”.
Day 3: Chicago, Springfield
This morning, together with our on board guide who will be with us throughout the tour, we start on our journey on this iconic road, even if over the years the road has been changed and modernised, our route will include the spirit of Route 66 which has captured the imagination of so many since its creation in 1926. We drive south to Springfield, which President Lincoln called home for so many years, visit the Lincoln’s Museum. Overnight at the Hilton Hotel.
Day 4: Springfield, St Louis
This morning we visit New Salem, it is where Lincoln lived and worked for six years. The reconstructed village includes houses, shops and a general store. En route to St Louis we stop at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, the original Route 66 which spans over the Mississippi River, is now only open to pedestrians, the afternoon we visit the brilliant Museum of Westward Expansion. For the next two nights we will be based at the Millennium Hotel.
Day 5: St Louis
Today is a free day, a chance for you to discover this amazing city on your own.
Day 6: St Louis, Springfield
First stop is the Museum of Transportation; the collection includes antique cars, boats, planes, locomotives and rolling stock. Later we take a tram tour of the Fantastic Caverns, admire this spectacular cave formation. Tonight we stay at the University Plaza hotel.
Day 7: Springfield, Oklahoma City
Today we cross into Kansas and on to state of Oklahoma, stopping in Tulsa. After a city orientation we check into the Courtyard Marriott Oklahoma City Downtown hotel for one night.
Day 8: Oklahoma City, Amarillo
We continue west leaving the plains of Oklahoma for the oil rich Texas Panhandle, visit the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, and then on to Amarillo for our overnight stop, we will stay at the Ambassador Hotel.
Day 9: Amarillo, Albuquerque
On to New Mexico known as “The Land of Enchantment” and Albuquerque a historic city after an orientation we check into the Hyatt Regency for two nights.
Day 10: Albuquerque
Today is a free day. The city which straddles the Rio Grande River, was built 300 years ago, explore the Old Town with its many museums and galleries.
Day 11: Albuquerque, Flagstaff
Today we arrive in Arizona, we visit the Petrified Forest National Park, where the remnants of an ancient forest have been fossilised. In the park is the Painted Desert a vast badland scattered with buttes and mesas. We will be based at the Courtyard Marriott for the next two nights.
Day 12: Grand Canyon
We visit a true world wonder, the spectacular and awe-inspiring Grand Canyon, whose colossal size is difficult to comprehend especially as its creator, the Colorado River is very small in comparison.
Day 13: Williams, Kingman, Laughlin
First stop is Williams a town steeped in Route 66 history, time to explore before travelling through Hualapai Indian country to Kingman and then on to Oatman, an old gold mining town. Tonight we stay at the Aquarius Casino Resort try your luck at the gambling tables.
Day 14: Laughlin, Santa Monica, Long Beach
Visit Calico Ghost town, an old silver mining town, then through the San Bernardino Mountains and on to Los Angeles. Driving down the Santa Monica Boulevard to the coast and the end of the road at the Pacific Ocean. We will be based at the Courtyard Marriott in Downtown Long Beach for the next two nights.
Day 15: Long Beach
Today is a free day; explore the waterfront it is here where the Queen Mary is docked.
Day 16: Los Angeles, London
Today we transfer to Los Angeles for our overnight direct flight to London Heathrow.
